Press Release: Meet the delegates of the 14th Australia-China Youth Dialogue

The past year has witnessed a stabilising of the Australia-China bilateral relationship, the resumption of high-level diplomatic dialogue, the lifting of trade impediments, and renewed optimism for travel, education, and science and technology exchanges.

Against this backdrop, the 14th Australia-China Youth Dialogue (ACYD) will be held in Adelaide this year from Friday 22nd November to Monday 25th November 2024, bringing together 28 delegates from both countries.

The four-day conference will explore the overarching theme of Planning for The Future By Learning From The Past, with each day focusing on a particular topic including: Geopolitics, Trade and Investment, Education and Tourism, Energy and Sustainability.

This year's dialogue will include panel discussions and interactive workshops, to be led by expert speakers from Australian government and universities, Australia-based Chinese companies, to bring discussions, insights and a more sophisticated understanding of the bilateral trade and investment relationship.

Overarching theme: Planning for The Future By Learning From The Past

Australia and China are of overwhelming importance to each other. With the end of the US-led unipolar international order of the post-World War II era, our two countries find themselves in an increasingly contested and competitive multipolar arena of world politics. Both countries can learn from the recent past in planning for a more prosperous future. There are important avenues for strategic communication and collaboration on global issues such as renewable energy and peace and security. This year’s dialogue will facilitate conversations between delegates and experts across industry areas to reflect on the history of Australia-China relations and how best to navigate our future.

What is the ACYD?

The Australia-China Youth Dialogue (ACYD) is the preeminent inter-disciplinary early career leaders’ dialogue between Australia and Greater China. ACYD was founded in 2010 on the back of a need for more institutionalised dialogue between Australia and Greater China, as noted by Dr Stephen FitzGerald AO, Australia’s first ambassador to China, in his 2009 article Learning to Live with China.

Each year since 2010 (with the exception of 2020 due to COVID-19), The ACYD has brought together 30 outstanding Australian and Chinese citizens between the ages of 25-40 years to participate in a track-II diplomatic dialogue hosted in either Australia or China.
