The Australia-China Youth Dialogue (ACYD) could not operate without the generous support of its partners. Through their contribution to the ACYD, our partner organisations demonstrate a commitment to nurturing a community of active, visible and connected figures in Australia-China affairs.
This year’s delegates are emerging leaders coming from a wide range of professions – policymakers, analysts, technologists, senior managers, creatives, academics and entrepreneurs. They will come together in Chengdu, China for a 4 day dialogue, bringing with them their experience and expertise from various fields to discuss issues pertinent to the future of the Australia China relationship.
The enclosed report provides an overview of the 11th and 12th ACYD events, which took place inHobart, Tasmania, and Perth, Western Australia, in May and November 2022, respectively. Unique tothis year, two dialogues were conducted due to interruptions caused by COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021.
The Australia China Youth Dialogue (ACYD) provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with and be inspired by emerging leaders who are passionate about contributing to the bilateral relationship in a constructive way. The 12th ACYD coincided with historic talks in Bali and the 50th anniversary of the Australia-China relationship, underscoring the importance of the ACYD mission to promote frequent and meaningful dialogue and cross-cultural exchange. It is an honour to be joining the ACYD alumni network and I encourage those with an interest in the Australia-China relationship to apply.
Participating in 2022’s Australia China Youth Dialogue was a thought provoking, inspiring experience – one that left me with a much deeper understanding of Australia and China’s important bilateral relationship. The forum created by the Dialogue organisers sits under Chatham house rules – this in turn meant the conversations we had were open and productive, touching on important areas for the relationship including trade and sustainability. I have already spoken to several friends about the Dialogue and would encourage those interested in international affairs and the Australia-China relationship to apply
The Australia China Youth Dialogue provides a fantastic opportunity for potential young leaders from various industries across countries to share their stories, experiences and views, it also be a bridge connecting non-government level exchange. More importantly, the ACYD community keep growing each year, greatly fostering the bilateral relationship between Australia and China. As we near the 50th Anniversary of Australia-China diplomatic relations, joining the Australia China Youth Dialogue was a reminder of the historic nature of our two country’s relationship and of the importance of young leaders striving for a positive future for our region. The passion and energy of delegates and speakers was an inspiring call to action; one that our cohort is already beginning to channel towards purpose-driven projects aimed at strengthening ties between our two countries.
The ACYD provides young Australian and Chinese leaders a unique opportunity to discuss the most interesting and challenging themes in our bilateral relationship. The conversations between delegates and speakers across the key theme "global sustainability" in the 2022 program are super constructive and hugely inspiring. Joining ACYD and you will meet the best young talents engaging with the bilateral relationships across all fields from both countries.
As trade tensions between the U.S. and China rise, there is an emerging concern that Australia’s own even-deeper economic relationship with China presents an unacceptable security risk. This raises the question of how the new debate about “bounded engagement” with China should be applied to the economic relationship.
